Prepositions | Kinds and Examples

 Definition-

Word that shows the place, position, time, source or method is called a Preposition.

🔸We are giving here some general rules about the use of some Prepositions. However, the proper use of Prepositions can be learnt by practice only.

The two most common types of Preposition are :-

🔸Prepositions of Time:

  • After his death.
  • At six 'o' clock.
  • By next month.
  • During the holidays.
  • For many years.
  • From 1rst March.
  • In the afternoon.
  • Until his death.
  • Within a month.
  • Till Sunday morning.

🔸Prepositions of Place.

  • Ran across the road.
  • Sat among the girls.
  • Stayed at home.
  • Stood before the door.
  • Hid behind the curtain.
  • Came from America.
  • Clouds in the sky.
  • Fell into the well.
  • Park near our house.
  • Jumped upon the table.

English Grammar


🔹The following Prepositions need special notice :

IN is used with names of countries and large towns;
AT is used with small localities, towns and villages.

  • They live in Delhi.
  • He lives at Model Town in Ludhiana.

IN is used for things in rest;
INTO is used for things in motion.

  • She was in bed.
  • He jumped into the river.

ON is used for things at rest;
UPON is used for things in motion.

  • I was sitting on my chair.
  • A cat sprang upon the table.

TILL is used for time; 
TO is used for place.

  • He slept till 8 'o' clock.
  • He climbed to the top of the hill.

WITH  is used for an instrument;
BY is used to for an agent.

  • The thief was beaten with a stick.
  • The thief was caught by the policeman.

FOR is used for period of time;
SINCE is used for point of time.

  • I haven't seen him for two days.
  • I haven't seen him since Monday.

BETWEEN is used for two persons or things;
AMONG is used for more than two.

  • There was a fight between the two brothers.
  • The villagers were fighting among themselves.
