NOUNS | Introduction | Kinds,Definitions and Examples.

Introduction-

                      Nouns are very common in English. They play a very important role in learning language.They are building blocks of Grammar.

                                 A Noun is defined as a name of a person, place, animal or thing. Nouns also name emotions, quality or state.

                           Let's study more about Nouns and it's kinds in this article. 

           Let's get started.

There are five kinds of Nouns:-

Proper Noun.

Common Noun.

Collective Noun.

Material Noun.

Abstract Noun.

Proper Noun-

                             Proper Noun is a name of a particular person, place or thing. All Proper Nouns begin with capital letters. Days of the week , months and festivals are all Proper Nouns. Proper Nouns also include the names of rivers,ships,mountains, seas etc.

Examples:-

  • Taj Mahal is a wonderful monument.
  • Nehru was a great leader.
  • I go to the garden on Sundays.
  • Sherlock Holmes was a famous detective.
  • December is colder than October.
  • Diwali is the festival of  Hindus.
  • We went to Kashmir last vacations.
  • I love my India.
  • Sachin is a well-known cricketer.

Common Noun-

                                      Common Noun is the name given to every person or thing of the same kind.

Examples:-

  • She is a woman with a heart of gold.
  • My teacher is very kind and loving.
  • We have climbed the mountain.
  • The books are kept in the shelf.
  • They go to the library daily.
  • The clerk is typing the letter.
  • He lives in a village.
  • Those girls are working hard.
  • We can see the stars at night.
  • I like to drink juice.


Collective Noun-

           Collective Nouns are used for a group of people, animals or things.  

Examples:-


  • A bunch of flowers.
  • A gang of robbers.
  • A company of parrots.
  • A clutch of eggs.
  • An army of soldiers.
  • A rouleau of coins.
  • A band of gorillas.
  • A pride of lions.
  • A crowd/mob of people.
  • A culture of bacteria.
  • A bunch of grapes.
  • A bale of turtles.
  • A sleuth of bears.
  • A grove/clump of trees.
  • A ream of papers.
  • A paddling of ducks.
  • A flick/flight of birds.
  • A company of actors.
  • A dray of squirrel.
  • A dynasty of kings.
  • A chain of events.
  • A kindle of kittens.
  • A class of students.
  • A team of players.


Material Noun-

                                Material Nouns are the names given to a material or substance of which things are made.

Examples:- 

  • The queen lost the ring which was made of gold.
  • Glass is made by heating the mixture of clean white chemicals.
  • I use the purse made of leather.
  • Butter is made from milk.
  • We get wood from trees.
  • Avoid plastic carry bags.
  • Silver is a soft metal.
  • Wool is obtained from sheeps.
  • Goats give us meat and milk.
  • Blacksmiths make the tools from Iron.


Abstract Noun-
                    Abstract Nouns are the names given to a quality, state, feeling or action. The names of arts and sciences are also Abstract Nouns.

Examples- 

  • Always speak the truth.
  • Wisdom is better than strength.
  • The little boy was awarded for his bravery.
  • It's my pleasure.
  • The peacock danced with joy.
  • Happiness is the key to success.
  • Honesty is the best policy.
  • This room is thirty feet in length.
  • It's the ultimate choice.
  • Laughter is the best medicine.
